Sign Language, Attendance Exemption Among Several Proposed Reforms By CBSE For Students With Special Needs

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is aiming to introduce sign language as a subject with several computer-based tests, attendance waivers and flexibility in selection of subjects for students with special needs, says The Indian Express in its report.
A board has been constituted to formulate guidelines in this aspect. Presently, one or two languages in board exams are made compulsory, and this reform can provide exemptions to children with special needs.
A senior official was quoted as saying, “It has been proposed that Indian sign language or braille should be treated as a language to satisfy the formula prescribed by the board.”
He added that for those students who face issues of mobility, CBSE has recommended the creation of digital content so that logistical problems can be minimised. Attendance has been stressful for millennials, who are forced to go to school to meet formalities.
All the states and stakeholders have been asked to give feedback on the matter.
This is set to bring about major reforms in the field of education, should the recommendation be implemented.
