During a campaign gathering at Tirupparankundram in Tamil Nadu yesterday (15 May), slippers were thrown in the direction of Kamal Haasan’s vehicle, reports The Tribune. The actor-turned-politician was addressing the crowd from the same vehicle at the time of the incident.
Although the footwear failed to hit the intended target, police officials have taken one suspect into custody in connection with the matter.
Haasan recently founded a new political party known as the Makkal Needhi Maiam which is now (MNM) contesting assembly by-elections in Tamil Nadu which are being held alongside the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.
He has been the centre of a huge controversy recently after proclaiming that the first terrorist of independent India was a Hindu, in a reference to Nathuram Godse, who was the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.
Moreover, he made this statement while campaigning for his party candidate S Mohanraj in a Muslim dominated area of the Aravakurichi assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu.
