Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will soon bring out the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) that will automatically identify roads that have potholes in them within the limits of Bengaluru.

Deccan Herald quoted B S Prahallad, BBMP’s Chief Engineer as saying, “We are adopting this method to bring in accountability. This is a holistic package where the physical process of identifying a pothole and verifying it after it is filled, is replaced through a smart solution.”

A vehicle that is fit with a camera will conduct the initial inspection of roads and demarcate the GPS location that can be relayed back to the contractors in-charge of fixing the potholes. In totality, the mechanism will ensure that the timeline, follow up, status, location and quality of work is recorded.

As a pilot project, the BBMP is going to test-run this in the east zone. Estimated cost of the project is yet to be revealed. The body believes that this will bring about the accountability in fixing potholes, which happens to be one of the biggest civic issues in the city. If implemented well, the city will see a change in the way it deals with filling potholes from time to time.
