Barely a few weeks after food aggregator Zomato was at the receiving end of social media outrage over the question of people’s religious choices relating to food, now McDonald’s finds itself in the same boat after revealing that halal meat was ubiquitous across all its Indian outlets.
The storm was kicked off on Twitter when a user asked whether the company was halal certified. In response, the McDonald’s India account responded that all its Indian restaurants carried halal certification and the customer could even go to these restaurants and inspect the certification on his/her own.
A large section of Indian Twitterati expressed concern that a small minority’s religious food norm was being forced upon everyone else. Other users pointed out to the seeming cruelty of the halal method of slaughtering animals and vowed to not eat at McDonald’s again.
A number of users also demanded that McDonald’s begin introducing Jhatka meat options at its restaurants to cater to Hindu customers.
Soon after the exchange regarding halal meat at McDonald’s restaurants in India blew up, #BoycottMcDonalds began to trend on Twitter.
