Karnataka has topped the country in the State Rooftop Solar Attractiveness Index - SARAL - which aims to gauge the development of an enabling ecosystem for solar rooftops across the states in India. Telangana, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh have came in at second, third and fourth rank respectively.
The index has been developed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in collaboration with Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation (SSEF), Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) and Ernst & Young (EY).
The idea behind the ranking is to allow states to learn from their leading peers and adopt the country-wide best practices. The index gauges a state’s solar ecosystem development based on five aspects,
The index has been created as per the target of generating 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022. 100 GW of the target is to be fulfilled by solar power of which 40 GW is expected to come from grid connected solar rooftops.
