In a proud moment for the country, a painting made by a 12-year-old boy from Tamil Nadu’s Dindigul district was selected by NASA for its 2019 calendar. N Thenmukilan sent the agency a painting with the theme ‘Space Food’ and was one among millions of school students who submitted their entries for the calendar, reports Times Now News.

Thenmukilan, the son of a school teacher and a headmaster, said that his painting urges astronauts to grow vegetables which add nutritional content to their diet, in space. He is the second boy from the same school to have his artwork selected for the annual calendar published by NASA.

The calendar, which was released by NASA’s commercial crew on 19 December, selected 12 entries from around the world. Each entry would be used for a particular month during a year, and Thenmukilan’s painting was chosen for November. The copies of the calendars will be transmitted to astronauts in the space station, said members of the crew.

"The artwork contest is designed to get our youth excited on science, technology, engineering, and math and to inspire our future scientists, engineers, and explorers," read a statement issued by NASA.
