Sri Lanka To Buy 10 Million Doses Of Covid-19 Vaccine From Serum Institute of India

After receiving 5 lakh free doses of Covishield COVID-19 vaccines, manufactured by Pune based Serum Institute of India (SII), as a gift from the Indian government, Sri Lanka is set to purchase 10 million more doses to inoculate its population, reports Livemint.
Sri Lanka's State Pharmaceutical Corporation is said to have signed the order for 10 million more doses from SII, and the agreement was approved by the nation's Attorney General on Monday (15 February).
It should be noted that the island nation has already used about 2.5 lakh of the 5 lakh doses received earlier, to inoculate the frontline healthcare workers and members of its armed forces on a priority basis.
Other than the supplies from India, Sri Lanka has also been assured of free COVID-19 vaccines to inoculate 20 per cent of its population by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Further, the Indian Army and the Russian military have also agreed to provide supplies of vaccines to the Sri Lankan military.
