Indian Naval Officer Abhilash Tomy has been successfully rescued three days after his yacht had dismasted. He suffered an injury while taking part in the Golden Globe Race. The spokesperson for the Navy tweeted on Monday (September 24) informing of the news.
He suffered a back injury after his vessel was hit by a storm. The waves were as high as 14 metres on Friday (21 September) and this resulted in the unfortunate incident.
Tomy was successful in contacting the race organisers in France on Sunday. He requested for a stretcher as he was unable to move on his own. He was representing the country in the race sailing on an indigenously built vessel S V Thuraya.
Tomy’s vessel was ‘rolling excessively’ in the southern Indian ocean, and it made the efforts more difficult to reach to him. His vessel was discovered by an Indian Navy aircraft yesterday (September 23), Deccan Chronicle reported.
Following this discovery he was rescued by the French ship Osiris.
In 2013 Tomy had become the first Indian to circumnavigate the globe in 2013. The race requires a solo journey of over 30,000 miles across the globe.
Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
