Study Law ‘Naturally’: Jindal Global Law School And WWF India To Now Offer Masters In Environmental Law

Jindal Global Law School (JGLS), which is one of India’s most renowned law universities, has launched an LLM programme in Environment Law, Energy and Climate Change, in partnership with the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF)-India, reports Hindustan Times.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to offer the course was signed between the two entities on Wednesday (27 March), with Supreme Court Justices D Y Chandrachud and Deepak Gupta being in attendance for the occasion. Also present were two judges from the Supreme Court of Hawaii, USA, Justices Michael D Wilson and Sabrine McKenna.
The new course will be on offer for law graduates who are seeking to gain a specialist legal education regarding national and global environmental issues.
Justice Chandrachud took the opportunity to refer to climate change as the greatest existential threat which was faced by humanity. He also noted the important role the judiciary had to play with regard to environmental justice.
“The rule of law in environmental governance is seen as an aid in recognising of environmental injustices faced by vulnerable groups such as indigenous tribes, women and livelihood reliant communities,” he remarked.
The founding vice-chancellor of the university, Professor C Raj Kumar, also spoke about the critical significance of environmental law, calling it the most important issue which law schools had to deal with.
