Subramanian Swamy and Rahul Gandhi
BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has demanded that Rahul Gandhi be stripped of his citizenship and his membership of the Lok Sabha, based on what he claims as incriminating documents that suggest the Congress vice-president had declared himself to be of British nationality.
In a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Swamy has urged immediate steps to examine if the “prima facie evidence is rebuttable, and if not, order that Mr Rahul Gandhi be stripped of his citizenship, and his membership of the Lok Sabha, forthwith.”
This is, prima facie, a violation of the law and constitutional position in the country, Swamy said, citing Article 9 (every citizen of India is barred from voluntarily acquiring citizenship of any foreign State); Article 18 (prohibits and Indian citizen from accepting even foreign titles); and existing laws that prohibit MPs from incorporating a foreign company abroad without prior permission.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
