Swiggy Personnel (@Swiggy/Facebook)
Going into a major expansion spree, food delivery sector unicorn startup Swiggy is set to hire as many as three lakh delivery executives across the length and breadth of India over the course of next year and a half, reports Times of India.
This target when achieved would take the total number of delivery executives employed by Swiggy to five lakh, which would make the company the third-largest source of employment in the nation after the Indian Army and the Indian Railways.
As of September 2019, the Indian Army provides employment to 12.5 lakh individuals while the Indian railways employ as many as 12 lakh persons. The IT sector behemoth Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) employs 4.5 lakh persons, making the largest private-sector employment generator in the country.
It should be noted that unlike the Army, Indian Railways and TCS who provide full-time job opportunities with benefits, Swiggy provides blue-collar jobs to its delivery personnel who are paid on the basis of the number of deliveries handled per day.
Presently, Swiggy employs about 8,000 corporate employees and 2.1 lakh delivery personnel who are not entitled to standard employee benefits like provident fund and pension services et cetera.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
