The Country Head and Managing Director of Foxconn International Holding, India has stated that India produces 12 mobile phones per second which translates into production of 22.5 crore phones in a year. The estimated value of mobile phone production in the country is said to be in the range of Rs 1,32,000 crore.

Further, the country’s import of mobile phones reduced by more than half in the financial year 2017-18 with the import of completely built units drastically falling from 78 per cent to 18 per cent. The Foxconn official expressed bullishness on the prospects of mobile phone manufacturing in the country and observed that the country’s domestic market was huge with a high degree of smartphone penetration.

According to data from the second quarter of 2018, smartphones have cornered a 42 per cent share of the mobile market with feature phones making up for a 32 per cent share and the remaining 26 per cent being made up of fusion phones which are essentially 4G capable phones.

The India Mobile Taskforce - Phased Manufacturing Roadmap (PMP) envisages the country achieving a 25 per cent share in global mobile phone manufacturing by 2019 which would also create employment opportunities for 1.3 million people in the country.
