Uma Gargi, a pro Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) social media influencer was today (20 June) arrested by police for tweets allegedly defaming Chief Minister MK Stalin, former chief minister M Karunanidhi and EV Ramasamy.

The arrest was initially reported to be because of a tweet made about actor Vijay.

In one of the tweets, she alleged that Karunanidhi had received a Rs 200 crore bribe from a Hyderabad based company during the establishment of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Nanguneri in Tirunelveli district.

Gargi, who was recently seen receiving an award from BJP state president K Annamalai at a programme in Coimbatore, has been charged under Section 501(c) (making, publishing, or circulating any statement or report containing rumor or alarming news which might foment racial, religious, caste, or other community-based enmity or hatred).

Her arrest comes days after the arrest of BJP state secretary SG Suryah who had questioned the silence of Madurai MP Su Venkatesan over the death of a sanitation worker after he was asked to enter a faeces filled drain in Pennadam municipality.

Suryah had erroneously mentioned Pennadam to be in Madurai district instead of Cuddalore district.
