The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned Rs 10 crore towards setting up of a Tamil Chair at the Harvard University in the US, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said today (27 October).
The move came following requests made to late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa by two US-based Tamils, he said. V Janakiraman and Thirugnanasambandam, who had been making efforts for establishing the Tamil Chair at the varsity, had taken up the matter with Jayalalithaa and sought the government's help, he said.
Subsequently Jayalalithaa included it (to extend assistance to such an initiative) in the list of promises as part of the AIADMK's election manifesto last year, he recalled.
The move will help in taking up research work on India based on Tamil language, enabling more students pursue research on Tamil culture, and bringing Tamil archives being maintained in US libraries under the research ambit, he said.
These will ultimately help the world know about the richness of Tamil language, the Chief Minister added. PTI

Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
