National Highway 48.
The Madras High Court while hearing a suo moto public interest litigation petition over poor maintenance of highways in the state asked the AIADMK government whether NHAI can be provided with a single window to obtain project clearances, The Hindu has reported.
Currently, the NHAI needs to obtain clearances from various state departments like Public Works, State Highways and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments for road building or widening projects.
While focusing on poor maintenance of a highway stretch between Maduravoyal and Wallajahpet, the High Court bench instructed NHAI to ensure sufficient lighting on the roads.
It also warned that NHAI too could be held liable for paying compensation to the victims in case the accidents were caused due to poor condition of roads or poor lighting.
Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
