The Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath (TNTJ) has demanded the release of the 1998 Coimbatore blast convicts.
It said that these convicts had spent over 20 years in prison and their case should be treated on par with that of the convicts released in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
Some TNTJ office-bearers like state vice-president E Farook and state secretary I Ansari met Additional Chief Secretary K Phanindra Reddy to put forth the organisation's demand.
They said that these convicts were discriminated against because of their Islamic faith.
The TNTJ demand comes after the rapturous welcome given by the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for the release of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case — A G Perarivalan, Nalini, Murugan, Robert Payas, Santhan and Jayakumar.
Recently, Perarivalan was even invited to give a lecture on 'denial of justice'.
The organisation which calls itself an apolitical Islamic socio-religious organisation, came under the scanner of intelligence agencies in 2019 after the Easter Day blasts in Colombo.
Earlier this year, three of its members were booked for issuing death threats to judges of the Karnataka High Court after the hijab verdict.
