Even as Reliance Jio GigaFiber has announced the commercial launch of its high-speed internet offerings, Tata Sky has extended its broadband operations to three new cities, bringing the total to 20 cities, reports Telecom Talk.

The three new locations are Lucknow, Navi Mumbai and Surat. This marks the company’s latest push to gain market share in Tier-II towns. Reliance Jio GigaFiber is not just a competitor for Tata Sky in the broadband space, but is also a direct threat to the company in the DTH segment, which is its primary source of revenue.

Along the lines of other players like BSNL and ACT Fibernet, the company is also trying to combat the perceived threat from GigaFiber by offering unlimited data packs at budget prices. The basic broadband plan offered by Tata Sky comes in at Rs 999 per month for unlimited data, with a speed of 10 Mbps.

Faster plans offered by the company are also not substantially more expensive. Other unlimited plans come in at a 25 Mbps connection for Rs 1,250 per month, a 50 Mbps connection for Rs 1,500 monthly, a 75 Mbps connection for Rs 1,800 monthly, and a Rs 2,400 plan offering a 100 Mbps connection.

Apart from these, plans with data limits are also available for consumers, such as a Rs 999 with 90 GB data per month at the speed of 50 Mbps.

The large number of high-speed subscription offerings of Tata Sky, combined with the company’s push to reach more and more cities, is bound to present a tough fight for competitors in the broadband space.
