Assets to the tune of Rs 225 crore belonging to a retired IAS officer of the UP cadre, Net Ram, were attached as part of a tax evasion probe by Income Tax (I-T) officials yesterday (Wednesday, 20 March), reports The New Indian Express. The officer had held several important positions during the rule of the Mayawati government between 2007 and 2012.

It is suspected that the officer has evaded around Rs 100 crore in taxes and thus action has been initiated under section 132 (9B) of the I-T Act.

The assets which were seized included 20 immovable properties in several metro cities, such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Noida. Three luxury cars found at his house in Lucknow have also been impounded.

Additionally, cash worth more than Rs 1.64 crore, Montblanc pens with an estimated value of Rs 50 lakh and four luxury SUVs were also seized. Documents which indicated ‘benami’ assets belonging to the officer to the tune of Rs 300 crore were also recovered.

The I-T officials became suspicious of the officer after receiving credible inputs that him and his associates were involved in making fake entries of about Rs 95 crore in shell companies registered in Kolkata.
