The University Grant Commission (UGC) has set up a four-member committee to investigate the ‘action taken’ reports submitted by ten central universities on earlier audits and recommendations, as reported by The Indian Express.

These reports were replies to earlier academic, research, financial and infrastructure audits of the ten universities by five committees set up by the UGC. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Central University of Rajasthan, Tripura University and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University are some of the universities included.

The audit had suggested that the AMU should drop the word Muslim from its name, which the university had termed as ‘preposterous’. It said that UGC ignored the institution's long history and “unique character’.

UGC’s new committee will now look into the reports submitted by the universities, and check whether the previous suggestions have been implemented (action-taken report).

According to the official UGC circular, the Sushma Yadav-headed committee will study the reports and decide the future course of action in December. Yadav is a member UGC and vice chancellor of BPS Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, Haryana.

The new committee has already held a meeting on this. The committee also includes Kuldeep Chand Agnihotri, VC Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Neeraj Tripathi, registrar BHU, Joint Secretary UGC.
