At least ten naxalite members of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-M) were gunned down early today (2 March) morning on the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border, reports Telangana Today. Those taken down included six women members and it is believed that the state’s head Haribhushan was also taken out in the opertion that was conducted by the Telangana Greyhounds force – an elite force formed to tackle the naxalite problem in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

One Greyhounds commando named Sushil Kumar was also killed in the intense gunfight that ended at 7 am in the morning. The encounter took place at Pujar Kanker, in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh.

Sources say that a Maoist camp was held in the deep corners of the jungles before the Greyhounds and the local police lay siege to it. Provisions were then made to airlift the bodies to Bhadrachalam for post-mortem examination.

An Insas rifle, four AK-47s, and an SLR were recovered from the camp.
