United States Congressman Pete Olson, while speaking at the US House of Representatives, praised India for abrogating Article 370 in Kashmir and said, article 370 was a temporary, stop-gap measure, that was forcing the people of Jammu and Kashmir live under different laws from the rest of India, reports TimesNowNews.

Olson also said that the move brings equality to all Indians, and this action brings peace to Kashmir and to bring normalcy in the militancy-hit Jammu and Kashmir.

“Today I spoke on the House floor to stand with India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he works to bring peace to the region, expand democracy and unite the people of Jammu and Kashmir with the greater Indian community,” Olson tweeted later.

“Jammu-Kashmir was given special treatment in the Constitution of 1947 in India. It was created by the “temporary provisions with respect to the state of Jammu-Kashmir.” It’s known as Article 370. It was supposed to be a stop-gap measure because the government hadn’t been formed yet,” Olson said.

“For 70 straight years, this temporary article has forced citizens of Jammu-Kashmir to live under different laws than all other Indians: different rules for citizenship and property ownership.

Earlier this year, the Indian parliament confirmed that Article 370’s temporary status should end. It ended. It gave the people of Jammu-Kashmir the same rights as all Indians. It was a landslide: 125 to 61 in the Rajya Sabha and 370 to 70 in the Lok Sabha. This action creates equality for all Indians,” he added.

Sunanda Vashist in her testimony last week at the hearing organised by Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission said, "We have seen ISIS level of horror and brutality in Kashmir, 30 years before the West was even introduced to the brutalities of radical Islamic terror. I am glad these hearings are happening here today because when my family and everyone like me lost our homes our livelihood and our way of life the world remained silent."
