A school in Coimbatore has received widespread flak for its communal policy on education. The Nirmala Matha Convent School in Kuniyamuthur, Coimbatore, had put up a notice for LKG admissions which said "LKG Application Only for Christian students will be distributed on 02.03.2019", prompting parental outrage, reports The News Minute.

The Coimbatore Chief Educational Officer, Ayyannan, reportedly visited the school on Saturday and conducted an inquiry.

Amidst strong protests from parents, the school authorities reportedly removed the controversial notice and apologised saying they did not intend to limit admissions to one community, but did “not want to overcrowd the school” for application processes as board exams were underway.

“They said that to prevent excess crowds at the admission counter, such a notice was given and that it was not based on any religious preferences. They also said that they would provide application forms to everyone in the days to come," Ayyannan was quoted as saying by TNM.

The CEO said that the investigation report and the letter would be forwarded to the Tamil Nadu Minister for School Education.

“Since public exams are going on, we wanted to avoid overcrowding at the campus. That is why we put up such a notification. The notification has been taken off now. In our school, students from all religions are enrolled,” the principal of the school was quoted as saying by TNM.
