Threatened With Water And Electricity Cuts, Over Half Of Overstaying Former MPs Leave Government Allotted Residences

More than 50 per cent of the former MPs who were overstaying in government accommodations have vacated their official residences after a Parliamentary panel threatened to snap their water and electricity connections, reports Economic Times.
According to the report, the number of overstaying ex-MPs have now come down to only 109. Most of the former MPs have vacated their residences on their own, said officials.
“But the one week ultimatum from the House Committee and PM’s mention of system being put in place for expeditious hand over of these accommodations to new MPs had the maximum impact. We are hopeful of more than 90 per cent compliance in the next few days,” an official was quoted in the report as saying.
According to the norms, Former lawmakers are required to vacate their official accommodation within a month of the dissolution of the Lok Sabha.
As per the report, as many as 300 MPs have been allotted fresh accommodation by the Lok Sabha House Committee. However, owing to the fact that the vacated houses need some maintenance, the new MPs would have to stay in the transit accommodation for few more weeks, said the sources.
