Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami has clarified that farmers are happily parting with their land for the Salem-Chennai eight-lane green corridor, and that only around four or five of the 100-strong group are creating obstructions to the project.

Reiterating that the vehicle count had increased substantially, from 1.7 crore to 2.57 crore now, in Tamil Nadu, he said it was the duty of the government to provide infrastructure as the days advanced.

On surveying works for the project, Palaniswami said boundary stones had been laid for 56 kilometres in Dharmapuri and 30 km in Salem district. “Only six more kilometres have to be surveyed to fix boundary stones,” he said.

On the opposition to land acquisition for airport expansion in Salem, he said the project had become a must if industrial growth and employment had to be promoted.

Commenting on matters of compensation, he said, the AIADMK government had outdone its rival DMK by chalking out plans to give the ones giving up land a better deal. He said efforts would also be taken to build ‘Green Houses’, besides giving land for farmers who surrender their property for the project.
