To commemorate the upcoming 125th anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi being thrown off a train for not giving up his seat to a white person in 1893, the Pietermaritzburg railway station in South Africa will sport a khadi look with khadi being used to drape seats in trains as well, reports PTI.

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has got an order for 400 metres of Khadi cloth to drape parts of the compartments, platforms and a stage. The function will be held on 7 June which marks 125 years from the day Gandhi was thrown off the train. The order was placed by the High Commission of India, Pretoria and the Consulate General of India, Durban.

Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj will also be present at the event, which is commemorated as one of the turning points in the nation’s history, along with the birth anniversary of anti-apartheid revolutionary and former South African President Nelson Mandela.

After returning to India, Khadi became a symbol of Gandhi’s resistance of the British.
