In a major embarrassment for the Pakistan army, senior officers with utter disregard to basic military discipline, danced along with Punjabi pop singer Humaira Arshad at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Sunday (27 October) evening to observe "Kashmir Black Day".

Evidently the show was organised by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan armed forces, headed by Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor for the officers to show solidarity for Kashmiris.

However, there was very strong and negative reaction on the social media after the images of the event went viral. People expressed disappointment over the manner in which top army generals ‘expressed’ their solidarity in support of Kashmir.

26 October 1947 is the day when Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir acceded to the Dominion of India and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had called for 26 October to be observed as a black day on Sunday.

However this embarrassing event organised to support Kashmiris was leaked when the pop singer who was invited to perform, sent out a tweet which drew sharp reactions from the Pakistani Twitterati. The tweet was later deleted presumably under pressure from ISPR.

Talking over the phone with IANS, Humaria's public relations manager Rizwan confirmed that she had performed on Sunday (27 October). However, he did not elaborate on the venue of the event.

Singer Humaira Arshad charges Rs 8 lakh to Rs 9 lakh for performing for a two to three-hour show but her manager has refused whether ISPR made any payment to Humaira for the show.

An enquiry has been initiated to find out why a pop singer was invited at the GHQ.
