The competition to get into a top junior college in Mumbai is going to increase from this year as two new quotas - for Marathas and the economically weaker sections (EWS) of general category - are kicking in, which could result in 83 per cent seats at most non-minority institutes being reserved, reports Hindustan Times.
According to the report, the non-minority junior colleges in the state currently reserves 52 per cent of their seats for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Nomadic Tribes (NT) students while 5 per cent of their seats are reserved for management quota.
In few colleges that have schools attached with them, another 10 per cent is reserved for in-house students. Together with the 16 per cent quota for Maratha and 10 per cent for EWS, the total reservation in these colleges would go up to 83 per cent.
As per the report, some of the colleges that have attached schools have a 20 per cent in-house quota for their students which the government has now decided to bring down to 10 per cent.
The increase in quota will reduce the number of seats available in the general category, thereby increasing the chances of cut-offs to rise even further.
