In what was initially meant to commend the state government and the centre for their role in opening the Kartarpur corridor for Sikh devotees, the Punjab State Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution which also calls for a land swap with Pakistan so that Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Pakistan, becomes part of Indian territory, reports The Indian Express.

During the discussion on the resolution, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime minister Imran Khan on the success of the Kartarpur corridor initiative. However, he stated that he would personally only use the corridor once Pakistan stops using proxy terror groups in Kashmir and Punjab.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) lawmakers came out strongly against Amarinder Singh’s comments, asking him to not associate the Kartarpur corridor with the problem of terrorism.

BJP and Congress MLAs were, on the other hand, in agreement with his views.

SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal took the opportunity to demand that the resolution also include a land swap proposal with Pakistan so that Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur could be brought under Indian control. Members of the House accepted this idea and the amended resolution was passed unanimously.

Congress MLA from Dera Baba Nanak Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, from whose seat the Kartarpur corridor will begin, propounded that land from his constituency could be used in the swap with Pakistan.
