The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has warned customers about fraud companies or individuals who are asking for money deposits as government tax under the Telecom Act for leasing their premises for installing towers, The Economic Times reports.

TRAI said: “It has been brought to the notice of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India that some companies/agencies/individuals are fraudulently asking members of the public to deposit money in their personal/companies account as Government Tax under Telecom Act for leasing their premises for installation of mobile towers.”

The regulator says that various no-objection certificates for installing telecom towers, allegedly issued by the ministries of communications and information technology are also fake. These culprits become unreachable after collecting the money. ‘

The notice from TRAI while cautioning the public, also tells that the regulator is not responsible for any claims, loss or damages that the customers could face, and will have to approach law enforcement agencies for the reporting the same.
