TRAI May Suggest Newer Frequencies For 5G-Based Services, Open To All Bands For Newer Technology

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) may be bringing the pricing and quantum of newer spectrum bands, the Economic Times Telecom reports. The spectrum bands would include millimetre wavelength (mmWave) range for 5G or wireless technology unveiling if the government asks for its view, a top official said.

TRAI Chairman RS Sharma said, “Government can ask for recommendations on new bands including millimetre wavelength (mmWave) band, and the telecom department can send us a reference”. The regulatory body is open to all kinds of bands for the newer technology, he adds.

In August 2018, TRAI had suggested airwaves between 3300 MHz and 3600MHz band for 5G applications. It has also admitted that various other frequencies were under the scope for 5G, including the mmWave spectrum in 28 GHz, 37 GHz and 39 GHz bands in the US.

With the commercial launch of 5G services by AT&T and Verizon, the mmWave band from 30 GHz to 300 GHz has seen more traction in the US market. A 5G Forum under Stanford professor and engineer AJ Paulraj has already suggested newer bands to help the rollout of 5G.

It recommended mmWave band and said the 140 MHz spectrum needs to be allowed with the opening up of new bands for indoor access, according to standard practices. In 2018, the committee had also asked the government to allocate 405 MHz of sub 4G spectrum and said it would consider 137 MHz.

The mmWave airways will be used for streaming high-resolution video apps and multimedia content as well as indoor services in various verticals of entertainment, healthcare and education. However, TRAI has already suggested the use of Gigahertz range which includes E and V bands as part of the mmWave frequency.
