According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the number of telecom subscribers in India grew slightly in the month of December in 2018 to 119.7 crore, with only Reliance Jio and BSNL measuring any growth in such customers, reports The Indian Express.

Jio gained 85.64 lakh new users while BSNL saw its total increase by 5.56 lakh customers, with their respective subscriber bases now standing at 28 crore and 11.4 crore.

“The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,193.72 million at the end of November 2018 to 1,197.87 million at the end of December 18, thereby showing a monthly growth rate of 0.35 per cent,” the TRAI report states.

The highest subscriber attrition was seen by Vodafone Idea, which lost 23.3 lakh users in December, but maintained its lead as the top telecom operator with 42 crore total subscribers.

Bharti Airtel’s number fell 15 lakh, reducing its customer base to 34 crore. However, since the company had ceased counting of around 5.7 crore low revenue subscribers in its financial performance report for Q3 of FY19, its effective subscriber base stands at 28.42 crore.

The number of landline users saw a marginal decrease from 2.19 crore to 2.18 crore in December, with market leader BSNL seeing they heaviest loss.

On the other hand, the broadband subscriber base rose by 1.3 per cent to 51.8 crore, with Reliance Jio being at the first position in this category with 28 customers.
