Trains To Be On The Dot? Real-Time Tracking To Promote Safety And Prevent Delays

Indian Railways is all set to introduce real-time tracking of its trains in the coming weeks. This is expected to promote safety and prevent travel delays, thereby improving punctuality and improved customer service, as reported by The Hindu BusinessLine.

“The Centre for Railway Information Services (CRIS) has tied up with ISRO to develop a system to get close to real-time update on trains’ location. This will provide updates every minute,” Mukesh Nigam, Managing Director, CRIS spoke to BusinessLine. This will be an improvement over current tracking systems that update the train location every eight minutes.

In the first phase of the project, real-time location tracking will first be implemented on passenger trains that run on the busy routes of the Golden Quadrilateral and its diagonal routes. Golden Quadrilateral is the national highway network that connects the four major metro cities of the country: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

To improve safety, Indian Railways has also eliminated all unmanned crossings along the major routes. It also recorded its safest year in the past five years. Also, to promote better customer service, the railways will install new charging points, fans and better seat covers on more than 2000 old coaches by the end of 2018.
