A militant of the National Liberation Force of Tripura (NLFT) (Biswa Mohan faction) on Saturday decamped from Bangladesh and surrendered before the Border Security Force (BSF) at Ambassa in remote Dhalai district of Tripura, ANI has reported.

According to the report, the 47-year old militant, identified as Sachindra Reang, is a resident of North Tripura and had joined NLFT two decades back.

BSF, in a statement, said it ‘appreciated and welcomed’ Reang for denouncing violence and returning to a normal life.

Reang reportedly claimed that he was operating from NLFT’s Segunbagan base camp in the Chittagong Hill Tract (CHT) as a commander. He informed that the life in the camp was very tough and there was a lot of sufferings as inmates do not even get any medicines during illness.

"According to the surrendered militant, the inmates are now engaged for slash and burn (jhum) cultivation there. No more arms and ammunition are provided to them (in fear that they may flee with them)," BSF said in its statement, as reported by ANI.

As per the report, the surrendered militant added that he was waiting for a chance to flee the camp and the night before surrender he succeeded in doing so.

"The fugitive militant had contacted the BSF's Intelligence Cell Deputy Commandant DM Punethwa and desired to return to normal life. Today he officially surrendered before DIG (Deputy Inspector General) SHQ (Sector Headquarter) BFS Teliamura Baby Joseph and Suresh Chandra, Second-in-Command at 71 battalion headquarters in Ambassa," the statement said.
