Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have blocked United States President Donald Trump's account after his supporters stormed the US Capitol building as the Congress was meeting and was expected to vote and affirm Joe Biden’s Presidential win, reports Hindustan Times.

Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol building on Wednesday (7 January) and violently clashed with police. One person was shot during the clash and succumbed to the injuries.

The social media platforms said that Trump's account was locked as his posts violated their rules.

Twitter also threatened to permanently suspend Trump from the platform if he violated its rules again.

"As a result of the unprecedented and ongoing violent situation in Washington, D.C., we have required the removal of three President Trump's tweets that were posted earlier today for repeated and severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy," Twitter said.

Twitter said it would require Trump to take down that post and two other tweets fanning his false claims about a rigged election, and that his account would remain locked until 12 hours after he did so.

"Future violations of the Twitter Rules, including our Civic Integrity or Violent Threats policies, will result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account," the company said.

"Our public interest policy — which has guided our enforcement action in this area for years — ends where we believe the risk of harm is higher and/or more severe," it added.

Later, Facebook also locked Trump's account, announcing it would impose a "24-hour feature block" that would temporarily strip the US President of his ability to post, reports Politico.

Facebook's Instagram platform said it was also locking Trump's account over policy violation.
