The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed all its affiliated varsities and higher educational institutions to observe 21 May as Anti-Terrorism Day, reports Economic Times.
Every year 21 May is celebrated as Anti-Terrorism Day in India to wean away the youth from terrorism and its clutches of violence by underscoring the sufferings of the people and stressing on how it is prejudicial to the national interest, the commission said in its letter to vice chancellors.
A set of activities have been suggested for the day to be held in the universities and their associated institutions such as debates, discussions, symposium, pledge taking ceremony and screening of the films etc.
"You are requested to kindly observe the 'Anti-terrorism day' in your university and in your affiliated colleges on May 21, 2019. You should accordingly organise appropriate programmes suggested by the Ministry of Home Affairs," reads the UGC letter.
The Anti-Terrorism Day is celebrated on 21 May every year in the memory of the former prime minister of India Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated on the same date in 1991 at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.
