As part of increasing international backlash against the plight of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang region, UN secretary general Antonio Guterres on Monday (29 April) said that the Chinese government must fully respect the human rights, reports AFP.

Guterres raised the issue of human rights violations in China during his visit to Beijing where he attended on Saturday Belt and Road Initiative's (BRI) second forum.

Over the past few years, China has received widespread international condemnation for its forced assimilation tactics against Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Muslim minorities its north-western Xinjiang province.

Detainees in government camps are allegedly forced to renounce their Islamic beliefs and indoctrinated in communist ideals.United Nations experts state that more than one million Uighurs and other Muslims are held up in these detention centres.
