Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.

Union Minister for Railways and Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Friday (5 March) made a push for India to turn self-sufficient in the manufacturing of containers to meet the shortage of the best quality containers, reports Livemint.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of a webinar on "Indigenous containers manufacturing", Goyal called for making containers enabled with GPS in the country for better logistics which is the life-line of the Indian Industry.

Goyal said that a large country like India which is on the path of high growth but faces a chronic shortage of containers for its exports needs to seriously explore the possibility of containers being manufactured in India.

He also emphasised on the need for indigenous manufacturing of refrigerated containers and said, "instead of depending on the imports of such containers we should manufacture them indigenously to work towards making India self-sufficient in the maritime economy."

Goyal also stressed on the need to enhance the production of Corten 6 quality steel for manufacturing good quality containers.
