Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Mansukh Mandaviya yesterday (6 March) flagged off the world's first all-women ship crew aboard Shipping Corporation of India Limited (SCI)'s product carrier ship MT Swarna Krishna from Mumbai based Jawaharlal Nehru Port, reports Asian News International (ANI).

The crew was flagged off as a part of SCI's ongoing Diamond Jubilee celebrations and also to commemorate International Women's Day on 8 March. A statement issued by the Ministry read, "This is for the first time in the world maritime history that a ship is being sailed by all women officers."

The statement also lauded SCI for being a pioneer in employing women seafarers on board its vessels and for implementing various initiatives to empower aspiring female cadets through its Maritime Training Institute, age relaxations and fee concessions.

Flagging off SCI's carrier ship, Mandaviya also acknowledged the contribution and sacrifice of the women seafarers who acted as the Indian ambassadors to the global maritime community and said that they have made the nation proud.
