In an unprecedented series of events, four sitting judges of the Supreme Court today held a press conference in which they raised issues regarding the administration and other aspects of the Supreme Court, and targeted the Chief Justice of India.
According to this PTI report, ‘ Justice J Chelameswar, the second senior most judge in the Supreme Court, today said the administration of the apex court is "sometimes not in order" and many "less than desirable things" have taken place’.
The ‘less than desirable’ things include the controversy over the allocation of cases in the Supreme Court. Readers may be reminded that in November a five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court overturned an order of a two-judge bench to set up a larger bench to hear a matter of alleged bribes taken in the name of judges, saying the Chief Justice of India (CJI) was the "master of the court" and had the sole prerogative to allocate matters. Today’s press conference is seen as a response and perhaps, a revolt, against such an adminisatration of the judiciary.
At the time of writing, the response of the Chief Justice was not known. However, separately, the Prime Minister had called the Union Law Minister and the latter had briefed him on today’s developments.
