The district sessions court of Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur has covicted activist Parwez Parwaz in a two-year old gangrape case and sentenced him to life imprisonment, reports Indian Express.

Parwez, along with an another person, was accused of gang-raping a 40-year-old woman on 3 June 2018. The complainant, a vegetable vendor, had alleged that she had gone to the house of Jumman Baba on 3 June 2018, for “seeking remedies” for her marital problems. However, the accused lured her to an isolated place and raped her at gunpoint along with a person who Jumman called Parwez Bhai.

They were later arrested in September 2018.

“District and Sessions Judge Govind Vallabh Sharma on Tuesday sentenced the two accused – Parwez Parvaz and Mehmood alias Jumman – to life imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on both and ordered that Rs 40,000 from the fine be given to the gangrape victim,” government counsel Yashpal Singh said as per the report.

It should be noted that in 2018, Parwez had moved the Allahabad High Court in 2007 seeking an FIR against Yogi Adityanath for alleged hate speech. Adityanath, along with the then Gorakhpur Mayor Anju Chowdhary and legislator Radha Mohan Agarwal, was accused of inciting a mob to riot in the over a decade old case.

In May 2017, the Uttar Pradesh government refused to give sanction to prosecution against Chief Minister in the case in the 2007 hate speech case.

The petitioner then challenged the order of the state government and filed a writ petition in Allahabad HC in 2018.

However, the Allahabad High Court had dismissed the writ petition filed by Parvaz against Yogi Adityanath after it allowed the UP government to not prosecute Adityanath.
