In an attempt to make the policing "smart” with the use of crime data and advanced technologies, the Uttar Pradesh police has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Kanpur, reports Hindustan Times.

Professor Abhay Karamdikar, on behalf of research and development wing of the IIT-K, signed the MoU at the UP police headquarters.

Director-General of Police O P Singh said, "IIT experts would help police in planning predictive policing by analysing the trends of stress calls coming from particular area and timing, type of crimes reported in a particular area, crimes related to women and children, cyber crimes and several other things. It will be helpful in taking precautionary and preventive measures.”

The IIT experts would also assist the cops in learning the analysis of DNA forensics along with training them to effectively use drones for surveillance and how to use them during riots, forest and terror operations and rescue work during natural calamities or accidents.
