National Cathedral
The National Cathedral in Washington D.C. rang its bells 500 times in memory of the over 500,000 Americans who lost their lives to COVID-19.
U.S President Joe Biden directed that the US flag at the White House lowered to half-mast through sundown Friday. He participated in a candle-lighting ceremony outside the White House in honor of the victims on Monday (Feb 22) evening.
Addressing the nation from the White House on Monday (Feb 22), Biden said "We've been fighting this pandemic for so long. We have to resist becoming numb to the sorrow. We have to resist viewing each life as a statistic or a blur or on the news. We must do so to honor the dead, but equally important care for the living, those they left behind. For the loved ones left behind."
“We’ve done worse than most any other country,” Dr. Antony Fauci, the chief pandemic adviser to President Joe Biden, told media over the weekend. “And we’re a highly developed rich country.” Fauci went on to say that the United States — on the verge of a ghastly milestone of 500,000 COVID deaths — had failed because of “disparate responses of different states versus the unified approach.”
The U.S. has recorded over 28 million cases of coronavirus since the pandemic began (8.5 percent of the country’s population.)
