A ‘military-judiciary nexus’ allegedly backed the current Pakistani Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan during his campaign during the country’s elections a United States (US) Congressional report has said. Khan has been under attack by opposition members calling him a ‘Selected PM’, in reference to the Pakistani security agencies backing him.

The bipartisan Congressional Research Service (CRS) has stated that the allegation may be true as the ‘establishment’ meddled with domestic politics to ensure that Khan become the PM, as reported by PTI.

The report also says that the Pakistani security agencies hold all the power over foreign and security policies, with Khan acting as a mere facade for their actions.

Bajwa had recently acquired a service tenure extension of three years which was criticised as the ‘establishment’ firming up its grip on the country.

The report also spoke of the increasing Islamisation in the country. "Election observers and human rights groups issued statements pointing to sometimes 'severe' abuses of democratic norms, and the unprecedented participation of small parties with links to banned Islamist terrorist groups was seen to militants (Islamist parties won a combined 10% of the national vote in 2018)," the report read.
