US-China wars
The Biden administration has floated the idea of a joint boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics as a protest against the human rights violations inflicted on Uyghurs in China's Xinjiang province, South China Morning Post reported.
A boycott by the US in coordination with Washington’s allies “is something that we certainly wish to discuss,” US State Department spokesman Ned Price informed reporters.
“A coordinated approach will be not only in our interests but also in the interests of our allies and partners,” he added.
"We have consistently said, when it comes to our concerns with the government in Beijing, including Beijing’s egregious human rights violations, its conduct of genocide in the case of Xinjiang, that what the United States does is meaningful, what the United States does will have impact, but everything we do that is – that brings along our allies and partners will have all the more influence with Beijing." Price added.
China faces accusations from human right groups that 1 million Uygurs and others from Muslim minority groups are held in “re-education camps” in Xinjiang province.
Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
