Democratic Representative from Hawaii, Tulsi Gabbard, has come under attack, mostly from Left-leaning liberal politicians in the United States for questioning the official line on the use of chemical weapons in Syria. Gabbard, who had met with Syrian President Bashar Al Assad earlier this year to discuss the humanitarian crisis in his country, has criticised last week’s US strike against the Syrian government, questioning the assertion that Assad was responsible for the chemical attack.

“The fact remains that they have not brought that evidence before Congress,” she said, pointing out the importance of presenting solid evidence before getting tangled up in a new war.

Some top Democrats, also from the Left, are taking aim at Gabbard. Howard Dean, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and Neera Tanden, head of the Center for American Progress, both took to Twitter to attack her for what they called a defence of Assad’s regime. Tanden went as far as to call on people to replace the third-term Democrat in 2018. Dean responded to Tanden’s tweet, saying that Gabbard is “a disgrace” and “should not be in Congress.”

Media in the US, which has seldom shied away from questioning the official line of the Donald Trump administration on issues such as Islamic terror, also took up arms against Gabbard. The Wall Street Journal’s Bret Stephens, on Twitter, referred to Gabbard’s scepticism as “Dictator Apologetics”.

This isn’t the only time the media has questioned Gabbard, an Iraq war veteran. She was branded as ‘Assad’s mouthpiece’ in the Washington Post after she met the Syrian President on her fact-finding mission to the country earlier this year.

However, Gabbard hasn’t been quiet and has reacted sharply to attacks launched against her. On Twitter, she questioned the wisdom of those willing to fight against Trump’s internal policies but parroting the official line on a ‘regime change war’.
