Uttar Pradesh And Tamil Nadu Govts To Use LDS Syringes From South Korea To Cut Down Covid-19 Vaccine Wastage

The Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Tamil Nadu state governments are actively considering using the low dead space (LDS) syringes to ensure the optimum usage of available Covid-19 vaccines.
These syringes are imported from South Korea and enable in lessening the quantity of drug that is left in the dead space of the syringe after injection.
Moreover, it comes of great use in cutting down the wastage of vaccines, allowing around 20 per cent additional people to get their jabs.
Major cities such as Lucknow and Noida are already using these syringes in UP, whereas the Greater Chennai Corporation will soon supply 3.5 lakh units of the same very soon.
Microbiologist Society of India President AM Deshmukh told The Times of India, “There is a dire need of 2,700 million doses per year in India, and if these syringes are used, we can get over 500 million more doses with the same amount of vaccine.”
States such as Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu have recorded a massive 37.3 per cent, 30.2 per cent and 15.5 per cent Covid-19 vaccine wastage, respectively; something, which has probably necessitated a widespread use of the LDS syringes to administer the doses.
