At least 51 policemen were fined yesterday (7 September) as per the new law for violating traffic rules in Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh, reports India Today. The drive was conducted after a number of videos of policemen breaking rules went viral on social media in the state.

According to Additional Director General (ADG), Meerut Prashant Kumar, the traffic police planned out the move to show them they were not above the law and successfully found 51 erring police officials in the district. The punished cops included two inspectors, seven sub-inspectors, constables, and head constables from various police stations.

The move is said to have spread a clear message among the policemen of the state as the caught cops were strictly warned and told to instruct their colleagues regarding the traffic rules violation.

Another statement was issued and sent across by Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) O P Singh warning that stern actions will be taken against any police personnel and will be charged double of the penalty amount, if found breaking traffic laws.

In the new Motor Vehicles Act, effective as of 1 September, the penalties have been increased massively for ignoring traffic rules.
