‘Veggie’s Delite’: Indian Railways To Go Vegetarian For Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday

The birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, 2 October, will be observed as a vegetarian day by the Indian Railways. The proposal sent by the Indian Railways in this regard to the Ministry of culture has been approved, reported Free Press Journal.
2 October is already being observed as Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday and ‘Rashtriya Swachhta Diwas’.
No non-vegetarian food will be served to railway passengers on railway premises. This means that passengers can only order vegetarian food in canteens and dining rooms of the railways.
Railway officials, however, have decided to keep the menu aboard its trains intact for those passengers who have prepaid for their non-vegetarian meals. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals will be served to passengers on board the train.
Indian Railways wants this diet plan to be followed in as many of its premises as possible, but due to logistical problems it won’t be possible to intimate all railway stations about the new plan for the day.
Railways is also planning to have thematic painting of all stations connected with Mahatma Gandhi. Digital museums depicting the activities of the leader of the fight for freedom will also be set up.
Murals of Mahatma Gandhi are proposed on the all the divisional headquarters, zonal headquarters and various administrative buildings of the Railways.
