India’s top seeded badminton player P V Sindhu scripted history on Sunday (25 August) after she became the first Indian shuttler to win the gold medal at the BWF World Championships.

In a match lasting just 36 minutes, the fifth seeded Sindu trounced the fourth seeded Japanese Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 to clinch the gold medal. Sindhu totally dominated the game from start to finish and at no point Okuhara looked capable of mounting a comeback.

With this victory, Sindhu extended her head to head lead over Okuhara to nine wins as opposed to seven losses. This was the third consecutive world championship final for Sindu who had to settle for silver on both the occasions.

While speaking at the post-match presentation, Sindu dedicated her victory to India and proclaimed how proud she is to be an Indian. She also thanked all her supporters, national coach Pullela Gopichand, the support staff and her family for her victory.
