Vice President Naidu Presses On Need For Judicial Reforms, Suggests Setting Up Supreme Court Benches In Other Cities

Vice President (VP) of India, M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday (13 September) pressed for the need of judicial reforms to improve the efficiency of the judiciary in the nation, as pendency of cases across the country continues to surge unabated, reports Asian News International (ANI).
Underscoring that a number of cases have been pending for last 25 years, VP Naidu made a case for the division of the Supreme Court into a Constitution bench based in Delhi, and four new benches in regions like Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai or Hyderabad, as suggested by the Law Commission.
Expressing worry over the state of judiciary, VP Naidu said that the government of the day needs to be more proactive in addressing the pending vacancies in the judicial system. Naidu also said that more benches should be added to the judiciary as that would help reduce the inconvenience caused to the litigants.
The VP also agreed with the thought promulgated by the incumbent Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi that the retirement age of the Justices of the High Court should be increased to help clear the backlog cases.
